Its not that easy to get people to visit your site; believe me, I've
tried. Sure, you can have it in the tagline of every mail you send, but
people usually have to pay for their own phone bills, so think "It
might be crap, I'm not going to waste money". Not that AYP was; I
thought it was a great site.
I've given up plugging my site. To be honest with you, I think I'm the
only visitor to it!

add this to the fact that buy buying it yourself from a reputable dealer
(and with a credit card?) you have a lot of protection..especially if
the original owner decided to do some hacking at the hardware
(overclocking, fan addition that went wrong etc etc)

True, see my idea below...
> I'm looking at heartbreak motel here ain't I?
motel?! :) Ahem, seriouly there is still a chance here! :)
Now there are a few things I notice here, DH0 to DH2 are PFS2 partitons
and therefore require the PFS filesystem to be written to the hard
disk's RDB i think, well it's something on the lines of that the ROM
base FastFileSystem can be replaced at boot time, bla bla... :) Now,
the thing that worries me is that the PFS FS has got corrupted or
something; and I guess that these partitons are not available at all.
(E.g.: on Workbench you get DH0:???? or something else..) What is
needed is to make sure the PFS FS is okay; and then see if you can make
a DOSDriver to mount the partition using PFS's FS. I would make one
now for you for your Hard Disk but:
A) I don't know the specs of the hard disk (eg: where the partiton
starts and ends, cylinders etc.)
B) I haven't wrriten a MountList entry or DOSDriver entry since 1996 or
so :)
C) I am at college
If you could write one which will mount your DH0, DH1 and Dh2
partitions with the PFS FS then you will at least be able to salvage
your stuff if it comes to that, ie: the excrement hits the fan! :)
Is this any more of a help?
Also, Automount and Bootable partition is set on DH0-DH2 and they do
have high enough priorities? Do they show up in the Early Startup
devices list? (the top button of the three)
That's all I can think of at this present time! :)
All the best,
Nick.

had this before with dodgy "warm reboot" programs/hacks/patches. turn
the machine off for one minute, THEN keep both mouse buttons pressed
down and do the old 'no startup-sequeunce' shenanigans.

ah! It does indeed look as if your RDB is shagged. RDB_salv *can* sort
this out...all it does is the RDB, not fix the partitions. all it needs
to do is add the PFS2 ID to the RDB..so that the Amiga can once again
recognise PFS2 FS partitions. if the RDB gets screwed, then the
filesystem info stored there gets killed or corrupted. Not the end of
the world at all - by using HDToolBox (and reading the PFS2 docs) you
can add the PFS2 info to the RDB yourself...just , for the start!, use
RDB_salv to get a working system back (minus PFS2 stuff initially)

Some, I take it I should get boot floppy and install the PFS fast file
to it?

A little, it's a plan anyhow.

Yep, they do show up at the early startup menu. I have tried disabling
the DH5 or DH0 partition and instructing which partition to boot from,
but I still get the ramlib error.

Introduction to the Capability Maturity ModelSM
for Software (SW-CMM(R) )
Official Course of Carnegie Mellon University, (CMU), Pittsburgh, USA
Organized by STQC Directorate, Department of Electronics
The SEI Capability Maturity Model for Software (SW-CMM) describes a
famework that organizations can use to determine their ability to develop
and maintain software; it is a model for organizational improvement. The
SW-CMM is based on the process management work of W.Edwards Deming, Joseph
M. Juran, and Phillip B. Crosby, and can be applied by organizations to
improve their software process through a software process assessment. The
SW-CMM also can be applied by acquisition organizations to select qualified
software vendors via contractor evaluations.
Are you comfortable with your staff's understanding of the SW-CMM?
Are you planning a CMM-bused improvement program and need a better grasp of
the Software CMM issues involved?
This three-day course introdues participants to the SW-CMM and its
fundamental concepts. The course discussion emphasizes understanding of
the five maturity levels and their characteristic key process areas (KPAs).
The course is based on version 1.1 of the SW-CMM, released in February 1993.
The Course is composed of lectures and class exercises with ample
opportunity for participant questions and discussions.
Introduction to the SW-CMM helps prepare participants to make valid
judgments regarding an organization's implememntation of the KPAs. The
course is helpful in identifying issues that should be addressed in
performing software process improvement as structured by the SW-CMM.
Course topics include
* Introduction about the process program
* Software process maturity SW-CMM principles
* SW-CMM overview
* Value of the SW-CMM-case studies of software process improvement
* Levels and key process areas of the SW-CMM
* Linking the KPAs together-common themes
* Interpreting the SW-CMM
* Future directions of the SW-CMM
Special features of this course
* The course is conducted by CMU authorised Introduction to CMM Trainers
* This is a prerequisite course for becoming SEI authorised assessors,
Instructors, and evaluators.
* Participants will be registered in Central database maintained by SEI, USA.

Okay, I have now had a few more thoughts, and it seems as if the actual

On the Workbench screen that is I guess?
Try typing in at a CLI/Shell
C:Info
See if the partitions show up in that. Also, I think if you type in:
C:Assign
At the bottom of the list is a list of mounted devices, if they show
(DH0-Dh2) show up in the Info listing they seem to be still there
(Early Startup gumph confirms that), if Assign doesn't show them then
it seems certain that all is needed is a FileSystem to mount them with.

Oh, sorry mate. Basically, a Mountlist or DOSDriver provides a way for
the Amiga to understand how to communicate with a device. Take the
predicament you are in:
The Amiga speaks English say, and your FFS Hard Disk partitions speak
German and your PFS partitions Russian. Now, a DOSDriver or Mountlist
could be looked at as being a translator. So for example between your
Amiga and your DH3-5 partitions is a translator which takes all the
Amiga's stuff in English and converts it into German which the hard
disk partition DH3-5 can understand. Now say for example that you have
no translator which converts English to Russian and vice versa. Now
they cannot speak the same language and give up, the Amiga walks off in
a huff and makes what it can of the situation and spews out ramlib
gumph.
A DOSDriver provides the Amiga a translator. If I could write a
DOSDriver for you you should be able to access DH0 etc. If you could
send me
at AITNS_6@student.ndevon.ac.uk the information in HDToolBox about
partitions DH0-2 (select partition drive and advanced options); there
should be loads of gumph about start and end cylinders etc., write it
down for each partition and send it to me!) And I'll write a DOSDriver
tonight or tommorrow for you! :)

Yes, try to install the PFS gumph on a bootable floppy disk.

Okay, I'll stick the PFS2 driver onto a boot floppy.

Erm, I would, but the only HDTool box I have access to at the moment is
the OS3.0 one. and when I run it, it doesn't find the drive. when I try
and get it to recognise (or scan) it comes back with a totally
different drive (my HD is a 4.3gb one using IDEFIX'97 for CD rom
access) So, until I can dig up my Emergency OS35 boot disk, which I
just can't find, the wife had a tidy up, I'm buggered. :(
If I do, I'll give you a shout. :)

Well, I'm not Ben but I think I know what the problem is. All that has
happened is that the daily message limit (200?) has been reached, any
further messages are sent to the moderator and if he thinks they are worth
going over the limit for they are sent to the list. Otherwise I guess they
vanish into some form of email void.
Downloading MP3s is not in itself illegal. Downloading MP3s of copyright
material however is much the same as borrowing a CD from the library and
copying it. Everybody does it (not that I'm saying that makes it right of
course).
See ya later,

Hi,
I am considering getting a Scan doubler and flicker fixer for my ickle
A600 project, now I need to know what ones are the best really?
An external version should work, since the internal ones are for AGA
aren't they? :) Basically are there any differences between those
offered by Power and Eyetech. Which one is the best?
Anybody got experience with one of these devices?

What, the luggable one you were talking about?

Yes, the internal ones are AGA (A1200?) only.

I got mine from PowerC. The plastic case is a bit tacky, but it works
well enough. I do, however, get a bit more noticable interference (on
screen) than connected straight to the port.
Also, the mouse pointer seems to change; seems to be longer in height
than it used to (and yes, it is in hires mode).

Nah. Apollo and Viper are different XLR8Rs. The Apollo 630 allows you to put
a 72-pin SIMM (anywhere from 1MB to 32MB) onboard, but the Viper's RAM is
built-in; no adding or subtracting.
>...but it has no CD-ROM drive, drat! (/me puts CD-ROM on the list)...
My advice to you: Squirrel for your A600; NOT Surf Squirrel. I've said that
many times, but you don't want a Surf Squirrel on a 600 -- it's a waste of
money, as the SCSI only works on a few [rather old] removable media drives,
if I remember correctly; it won't work on a CD-ROM. (The fast serial port
does work, though, providing you have an '020 or better. But you're better
off with a Whippet.) The "classic" Squirrel works like a charm, though.

Perhaps, but that's not nearly as annoying as someone replying to long

It's fine to answer single questions on list when the thread is fresh,
but if you were to do it a week later, it's pointless, because a) it's
probably already been answered, and b) if it hasn't been answered, the
person who posed the question will have given up looking for an answer
on the list anyway.

I use an EZVGA plus from Eyetech. Seems to do the job well enough.
One gripe with it though, is when it bypasses signals higher than 15khz.
They seem to get degraded, this is a pain because at the moment I use DBLPAL
high-res no flicker which is a bit over 27khz. This unit also has a flicker
fixer but it only fixes 15khz interlace modes. The pointer looks strange in
these modes so I don't use them.
Cheers,
Rudi.

Check both in TP and WB's printer manager that you have not set DEFAULT
TEXT
to color(RGBC) or something...or that your black cartrige is not
empty...
But since you get these problems with Multiview, try to select EpsonXOLD
or another standard driver if you wanna print just text...might work..
set text to black in the printer prefs.....or set it to black/white...
don't remember right now whitch...
good luck...

Hello, Ben & all
Why don't you put full commercial games on next months CD , games from
1988-1993/4 in DMS files :) better than downloading those crap adf
files.
And put on the CD some old AF floppy's in DMS files from the very first
AF floppy version up till AF CDs came in. with the Theme "Blast from the =
AF past" and use one page for the very first AF cover. =
just a thought :-) =

I wouldn't even think about it either. Me + Soldering iron = Danger! I
wouldn't put one near my Amiga, which means that, if I want a PCMCIA

Well, the proof is in the pudding.
Advert on AmiBench from Steven Flowers (under Wanted/UK)
Wanted : blah, blash blah. blash
Oh I forgot an Blizzard Vision.
I think that this means that they don't have any, otherwise he would have
one himself :)
Strange though, he didn't have an advert for Goal2000 or Putty Squad -
surely he wants a copy to sell?

IMO amiga users who are not on the net might think just because there is
no amiga mag left (GOD Forbid) there is no more support from them,
I have been a Miggy user since i got my first A500 in the 80"s so mag or
no mag my amiga stays and my gameboy can go :-)
AF will be here in years to come :)

1. Cos fewtch/AF don't have the money to pay the authors/publishers to do
it.

That is quite a good idea - apart from the fact that I have them all I
think. Oh and also, any full commercial software (see para. above) would be
a problem.

I'm not Ben either, but since we are many other able to answer I will
do my part..:D
I agree with another user on afb....downloading MP3's are not illegal...
Something the record companies don't like much.
If you don't know..I'll explain..
MP3 is a file format that one uses to pack down large audio files
called CDDA
from common audio CD's one CDDA song is about 50 meg in size...packing
this
with MP3 filters away some background noise one usually don't hear and
the
remaining size is about 5 megabytes...A complete Audio CD normaly
occupies
770MB of sound....the same record packed with MP3 would only take about
70MB..
all songs..
you need an MP3 player like AmigaAMP or mp (AmigaDOS) to play these
files...
you might even encounter files named MP,MP1 and MP2 which are older
versions
of the fileformat...
note that playing MP3 on Amiga is a hard task for the CPU unless you
have
a sound card like Prelude and it's MPEGit module...which is a single
chip
with the only task to un-pack and play MP3 files..and therefore
unloading
CPU time...
MP3 are usually 16bit or higher bitrated sound files...and playing them
on
an unexpanded Amiga will not sound very good...unless your force it
trough
a 14bit sound emulator....
The illegal thing about MP3 is to spread it....
You may freely pack any of your own CD collections as MP3 if you wish,
but you are not allowed to spread them around....
MP3 files can easilly be converted BACK to CDDA audio cd files by
converting
the MP3 file to a sound file format like WAV or AIFF....and then burned
onto
a CD...thus making your own music CD's..:D
Getting hold of MP3's might be a tricky problem on the net, unless you
got
contacts or friends who know people who know people....
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a good way to get MP3 files, but note that
they
take a while to download on a modem...
Hope this explains a few things about MP3 for you...
sincerely
Toffy

If you're trying to line up some images using tables and want them
`butted' up against each other, some browsers will still leave a gap,
even when CELLPADDING & CELLSPACING are set to "0". The only way around
it, is to set the TD width and height to that of the image.

The correct tag to use is FRAMEBORDER=0
this removes all visible frames in stated frame...
works with all browsers exept older versions of Ibrowse and current
versions of AWEB....those force frames to be visible with small borders
anyway,..

There was an article in Sunday's "Observer" about
whether the internet is good for you or not. They
must have dug deep into the archives for the picture;
it was some bloke pirating games with an A500 and
X-Copy. Ah, well. At least the Amiga will be
remembered for something.
Digitiser amused me recently too. They got a letter
complaining about the lack of "indie" talent in the
computer/console market, and Fat Sow was complaining
that no-one makes original games (because of the cost)
or 2D platform games (probably because no-one makes
decent planar chips any more).
Funny, I don't remember them being too sad about the
death of the Amiga, whose strong points have always
been originality, 2D games and, moreover, a nice and
healthy PD market.
Fools.

you wont *have* to send it away...the CC_FIx isnt *required*. it just
solves the card reset problem.

*_DO NOT USE ANY OTHER SET PATCH_* if you are using OS3.5 as this contains
the NSD:Patch
aswell. You could try looking in DEVS: for a file called NSDPatch.cfg and
editing it in ed
to suit your setup as i did. After that i had no more problems.
Cheers,
Sean.

I don't know. Anyhow it would be difficult to edit a file in a
partition I
cannot access. :(

Subject: [afb] PCMCIA network cards/CC_reset question.
MIME-Version: 1.0

Hi all,
I am looking to get a PCMCIA network card to add my A1200 into my home LAN
(in anticipation of cable modems).
My questions are; What does the CC_Reset fix do? Is it essential? What will
happen if I don't bother with it? and finally; Does anyone know where I can
lay my hands on a list of suitable network cards (preferably with UTP
connection rather than BNC) that have been proven to work properly on an
A1200 (with or without the fix).
Phew.
See ya later,
Oll

Of course. Haven't you seen the new version of XCopy that can download
files and then copy them to floppy drives over the net? ;)

It was probably one of their satirical comments about the Amiga being
dead.

It's a fiver cheaper than it is to upgrade an A1200 to OS3.1/3.5
